How Do I Start My Own Clothing Line?

Saturday, October 31, 2009

How to Sell Your Clothing LineStart by taking your design sketches or CAD drawings and create design samples or prototypes that you can show to prospective buyers. If you don't sew, you can pay someone to sew your designs for you.

Then you want to make a list of department stores in your area. Research who the store buyers are and contact them. Set up appointments with each of the buyers to show your design samples. It's important that you target stores only that sell items that are similar in style to your designs. You don't want to waste your time with stores that don't have a market for your designs.

At your showing appointment with the buyer, it's possible that the buyer may want to place an order, so be prepared. Have a clear idea of how many items you can produce in a certain period of time. Also decide whether or not you need the buyer to deposit a partial payment up front.

2 Tips for Getting Free Publicity for Your Business

Sunday, October 25, 2009

How to Write a Press ReleaseWhen you write a press release, you want to grab the reader's attention with a catchy headline. Make sure you don't sound like you are trying to sell something - but rather you are providing important information to your reader.

Keep your press release at about 1 page and send samples when applicable. Focus on benefits to the reader, use bold headlines and break large paragraphs into smaller ones for easier reading. See sample press releases here under "Step 2".

How to contact journalists - and get noticed!

Journalists are busy. The best way to get through to them is to get their attention - stand out from the crowd. You can do this by picking up the phone and calling them directly, sending a personal email, writing a letter to the editor or speaking at public events. You can also submit articles to publications to be used as content - reporters are always looking for good content which makes their job easier. Find Media contact sources here under "Step 3".

How to Open a Bookstore & Sell Books

Friday, October 23, 2009

How top Open a BookstoreBook selling is a BIG business. You can sell online, set up a brick-and-mortar bookstore, write and publish your own books, create and sell ebooks, open your own online store or sell through someone else's website, like Amazon.com

There are many types of bookstores you can open: used bookstores, green bookstores, textbook bookstores, Christian bookstores - even bookstore cafes.

Although it can be challenging to compete with huge companies like Amazon or Barnes & Noble, if you focus on a smaller niche market and offer hard-to-find items or a unique store atmosphere, you will have much less competition (and when you open your bookstore, it will be much more likely to succeed).

Books are not only read for pleasure - but business, education, purchased as gifts, for hobby enthusiasts of all sorts, given to children, even as coffee table decoration. There is no doubt a large market of book buyers - and a wide variety of potential markets you can reach

How to Start a Consulting Business

Thursday, October 22, 2009

Computer Consulting BusinessIf you enjoy working in a particular field, and have knowledge and experience in that field that you think could assist others, consulting could be the ideal business for you. Many consultants who work for themselves work from home. They can meet their clients at their clients' place of work, or they can consult over the phone or via the internet.

A few examples of consultants are: computer consultants, business management consultants, wedding consultants, coaches, IT consultants, financial consultants and image or fashion consultants.

Of, course you will be more marketable if you have experience working for well-known or prestigious companies in the field of your expertise, or you have completed impressive jobs successfully. Focus on a well-defined niche. This can make you more attractive to potential customers. Don't try to advertise yourself as the jack-of-all-trades. The better your specialty matches their needs, the more likely they are to believe you can handle their projects.

How to Sell Books on Amazon

Saturday, October 17, 2009

Sell Books on AmazonWhether you need to get rid of a few old books, or you want to start a full-time business selling books online, Amazon can be a great resource for making money. You may be surprised at the value held by the books collecting dust on your bookshelves. There are also bargains just waiting to be found at garage sales and thrift stores. You can literally buy unwanted books for pennies on the dollar - and resell them for profit to readers who really want them.

Selling books on Amazon can be a very low-cost business to operate, since you buy only as much inventory as you can afford, and you don't have to set up a storefront or advertise, since the Amazon marketplace does that for you. You don't even have to be present during customer purchases, so your business can truly operate 24 hours a day without you having to work non-stop.

3 Steps to Your First Small Business Website

Tuesday, October 13, 2009

Small Business Website DesignIf you want to start an internet business - or simply establish an online presence for your existing business, the idea of designing a website can be daunting. Do you try to do it yourself - or pay lots of money to a website designer?

Which option is worse?

Solution #1

Thank goodness there's a real solution for those of us who aren't tech-savvy and don't have a pile of cash sitting around. Homestead (an Intuit company) offers an easy-to-use website builder. Not only is it easy to use, it's affordable and it turns out professional-looking websites in a matter of hours. I was pretty impressed myself when I first saw their design templates. They have a free video you can watch to see it's something you like. Take a Tour!

Solution #2

XSitePro is a website design software program that I use for my websites. It's super cool, but there are lots of things you can do with it - which, of course, make it confusing sometimes. Well, now they're offering a "Complete Guide to Website Building" course for those who want to learn more about creating their own sites. I have attended all of their online training programs, and they have been well worth it. I will also be attending this one. I suggest signing up only if you want to create multiple sites. Get on the List.

Even though there are lots of professional designs and cool-looking graphics available - don't forget the purpose of your website. Here's an article that goes beyond design to help you with the 3 Steps to Your First Small Business Website.

Filming Video - for the "Low-Tech" Person

Monday, October 12, 2009

theFlip UltraThe Flip Video Camera
Cheap, easy and fun!
This little video camera is great for producing website videos (nice quality even in low-light environments), as it works perfectly with a computer and already has software pre-loaded. Available in HD also.
Some cool stuff: built-in microphone, built-in speakers, tripod mount, zoom feature and there's even an underwater case accessory available. Super small, so it's easy to travel with and the ideal camera for filming "on the fly".
If producing videos was ever a chore, it definitely isn't now. You'll be able to get your work done faster and upload them to your website in no time.
The first time I saw this camera, I was afraid to try it. That all changed, however, after I shot my first video. You'll love this video camera, especially if you're a "low-tech" kind of person like me.

Do I Need a Business License?

Sunday, October 11, 2009

Home Business ExpertOne of the frequent questions I see is, "Do I need a Business License?"

This, of course, depends on your business. Requirements vary also by location, so you want to contact your local government office to see which regulations apply in your area to your specific business.
You may need just one license, or you may need more. You also may need a permit.

That said, it's not as complicated as it may sound. Your local government office can generally give you all the answers, plus forms your need to apply and instructions on the application process. Most times, you'll just fill out the forms and submit them with the licensing or permit fee. You'll find some helpful tips on a new Squidoo Lens called How to Get a Business License, including restaurant licenses, salon business licenses and import-export licenses.

I recently received a question from a subscriber about "retaining clients".

Home Business ExpertMost times, I'll get questions about finding new customers, but retaining clients is even more important. But how do you do this? It can be as simple as communicating with them. Here are 6 strategies that you can implement this week, and surprisingly make a big difference in your business (even if you have a small customer base).

Tuesday, October 6, 2009

I read an article over the weekend in the NY Times about the upcoming holiday season, and how retailers are expecting sales to be flat this year.

Retailers aren't necessarily taking this prediction as a "bad thing", but rather a sign that retail spending is on its way to recovery. (At least sales aren't expected to decline.)

Another interesting comment that the article made, however, is that customers are temporarily changing their spending habits. This may mean that if you can tailor your business' products or services to meet these needs - you may well have a very profitable holiday season.

For example, buyers may focus on more "at-home entertainment" products such as those related with cooking, TV or movie items, family games etc.

Something to think about...
