How to Open a Gift Shop 1-2-3

Monday, May 31, 2010

People buy gifts year round. Even with thousands of websites and mail order catalogs, local brick-and-mortar gift shops still play an important role in gift giving.

Many gift-givers find themselves having to shop for gifts at the last minute. Gift shop businesses can supply cards, wrapping paper and supplies and even unique gifts that shoppers need immediately - and that websites and catalogs can't provide.

Gift shops can provide items like helium balloons or bulky party supplies that customers don't want shipped anyway.

That doesn't mean that you don't still have to compete with your online counterparts. People still shop for gifts online plenty, so it's smart to consistently offer new and different items that customers will have a difficult time finding elsewhere. You may want to feature handmade work of local artists or include all-natural or organic products.

Home Business ExpertEveryone wants their website to have a higher search engine ranking. There are lots of tricks to optimizing your own site. However, you can optimize your website only so much.

The next step is to expand your optimization techniques to other sites on the internet.
Search engines want to see other sites linking to your site as well, preferably important, respected sites, or those with lots of traffic.

But obtaining incoming links from other sites can be challenging and time consuming. Not everyone wants to exchange links, and you can spend a lot of time requesting links or link exchanges, and end up with nothing.

Finding Opportunity in Crisis (ie. BP Oil Spill)

Friday, May 28, 2010

With every crisis comes opportunity. And while the BP oil spill off the Gulf Coast is no laughing matter, some businesses are finding opportunities and trying to make the best of this disaster.

Despair.com is a company that retails black-humored merchandise online, designing a t-shirt with the slogan, "BP: We're bringing oil to American shores." It has quickly become a hot-seller, giving people a way to vent their frustration and publicly share their opinion. You can read more on this story here.

But Despair.com is not the only company taking advantage of the oil spill situation. You can find similar items for sale through other small business merchants on popular websites like Etsy, Zazzle and Cafepress.

In fact, you don't have to have much capital or experience to start selling products of your own on these sites. Zazzle and Get FREE shipping on orders over $65 from CafePress even supply the products for you to sell - you simply provide the designs. It's a pretty easy and affordable way to set up an online business of your own - and you can take advantage of all sorts of opportunities and events that happen throughout the year.

Why Start a Car Detailing Business in 2010...?

Wednesday, May 26, 2010

Auto detailing can be a lucrative business, and combined with potentially low start up costs and minimal overhead expenses, this can be a great low-risk business to start.

Starting a car detailing business can be even more profitable in 2010 because of the money crunch people are experiencing. Let me explain.

People who are selling their cars are now more than ever looking for ways that they can increase the money they receive from the sale. People who are returning leased vehicles are concerned about money as well - trying to minimize dings, dents or scratches to avoid hefty fines.

Home Business ExpertAn auto detailer can provide a valuable service - either saving these car owners money or increasing their profits. And this is not just an idea or concept, an auto detail shop in Kentucky is doing just this. You can read the story here.

Starting a car detailing business doesn't have to difficult, especially with guidance from an auto detailing expert like Bob Keppel, who has put together 21 auto detailing videos to help auto enthusiasts get started in this profitable field. Available for under $50.

Another home study option is to take an online course through Penn Foster Career School, an accredited school that offers automotive business courses. You can request free information, and the Auto Detail course runs between $800 and $900.

The Best Industries for Starting a Business in 2010

Monday, May 24, 2010

Inc. Magazine just announced the top industries in which to launch a business in 2010.

As you might guess, many of the fields that are growing appear to be doing so as people downsize their spending. Are game and home entertainment a trade in for spendy vacations? Is vintage clothing the new designer wear?

This article also mentions that tutoring and exam prep is experiencing significant growth as well. Another article I recently read confirms that education is an important investment, even for those are cutting back on other expenditures.

coffee house businessOf course, many companies providing solutions to environmental, transportation and health needs are doing well too. You've probably noticed lots of new vitamin-enhanced drinks, all-natural beverages and teas with antioxidants coming on the market.

Tea is an interesting market because similar to coffee, there are tea shops, mail order tea companies, hot and cold tea drinks, a variety of different flavors and a huge client base to draw from. The main difference is the growing awareness of it's health properties.

Should be interesting to see what new tea-related products and services develop and how this market expands. Find out how to start a tea business.

Coming Up with Good Business Ideas

Thursday, May 20, 2010

Good business ideas solve problems and provide solutions for people. This can include products or services that save people time or money or make a task easier.

When trying to think of a good business to start, brainstorm all of the problems that people have that you could potentially fix. These can be physical or emotional problems, health problems, educational needs, financial problems, social issues and more. Basically, if you can help people live a better life by solving a problem for them - they are very likely to pay you money for it.

Great business ideas do not need to be big or even necessary. Mrs Fields Cookies and the iPod are two examples of this. IPods are not essential to live and Mrs Fields didn't bake the first cookie.

However, being different, putting a unique twist on an existing product or service or even doing the opposite often produces some of the best business ideas. See how: Good Business Ideas

Business Insurance - Do You Need Any?

Monday, May 17, 2010

Home Business ExpertWhen starting a business, questions come up about insurance - Do you need any? How much do you need? What should you insure? Where should you get insurance?

There are several different types of coverage, some of which apply to certain businesses, while others do not. For example, a bookkeeper will want to get errors and omissions insurance, where a delivery or moving company will need commercial auto insurance or a building contractor would get workers' compensation to insure their workers against on-the-job injuries.

The coverage needed for your business will depend on the type of business you run, where you are located, how you run your company, if you have employees, have vehicles, etc.

How to Register a Domain Name 1-2-3

Thursday, May 13, 2010

If you want to set up a website for your business, you will want to register a domain name (URL) for that website. Often, it is a good idea for your website to be the same as your company name, but this is not a requirement. Your domain name can be an abbreviation of your company name or a different name altogether (like a description of your products or services combined with your company location).

make money with domain namesStep 1: Choose a Domain Name

You first want to start by finding out if your domain name of choice is available. You can do this by using a domain name registrar like Go Daddy and use their domain name register search box. Generally, a.com extension is preferable, but you can usually use a different domain extension if a.com is not available, such as.net,.info or.biz. You can also include dashes and numbers in your domain name if you are having difficulty finding website url availability.

Step 2: Register Your Domain Name

Some website hosts include domain registration free of charge, so that you do not need to pay for it separately. Alternatively, some domain register services provide website hosting, so that when you register your domain name, it will automatically direct to your website. These are both good tactics for saving money and making website set up easier.

You also have the option to register your domain name with one company and get website hosting from another company. For example, if you have a blog with a free service like Word Press, you can purchase a domain name and point it to your blog website address. You are not required to purchase additional hosting.

In any case, you can register a domain name before you have a website. You simply register the name and "park" it until you are ready to point it to a website address.

Step 3: Point Your Domain Name to Your Website

When you are ready use your domain name, you have a couple of options. If you want to forward the domain name to one page, you can redirect the domain name to a specific web address. If you want to use the domain name for an entire website, you can point your domain name to a website location using name servers provided by your website host. The website hosting company that you are using will provide you with the name servers and instructions on set up.

When you update your name servers, allow 24 to 48 hours for other networks to access the information and for your website properly appear on the internet.

You can sometimes save money by registering a domain name for multiple years or by finding a domain name registrar who is having a sale. Keep in mind that you will need to renew your domain annually. Many domain name registrars will let you register domain names for cheap for the first year, but the renewal price will usually return to the regular rate.

Get creative tips for domain names and use the free domain name search tool.

Do You Need a T1 Line?

Monday, May 3, 2010

Home Business ExpertIf your company is growing or your business provides internet or phone service to several people or work stations, it may be time for you to upgrade to a T1 line.

When using a basic cable internet connection to provide service to lots of people, you're going to have lag time, which can be easily resolved with a T1 line. T1 service provides the bandwidth that small businesses need at a price that they can afford.

Small businesses use T1 for internet service, phone service or both. A T1 line can support approximately 24 employees on a single line, so you can imagine how much money can be saved on communications expenses alone.

As with most products and services, shopping around can save you a lot of money. ShopFor T1 is an online service that lets people compare T1 Voice, Data or Integrated solutions from multiple providers, so they can be assured that they are getting the best price for T1. They give instant price quotes, so you don't have to worry about wasting your time.
